The DDS CAL2K range is used to determine the calorific values of liquid and solid sampled. The range of CAL2K oxygen bomb calorimeters is manufactured to be used with various applications; coal analysis and oil analysis being the most popular applications.

The CAL2K range consists of the entry-level system (The ECO Calorimeter), which delivers up to 1 sample per hour, the mid-level system (The E2K Calorimeter), which delivers up to 6 samples per hour, and the advanced system (The CAL2K Calorimeter), which delivers up to 10 samples per hour.

The ECO calorimeter system is the most cost-effective system in the range and is ideal for educational institutes and universities.

The E2K and CAL2K deliver more samples per hour, making the system cost-effective (compared to other systems), fast and reliable, with maximum productivity.

The newest addition to the DDS Scientific range is the CAL3K advanced bomb calorimeters, which combines the Isothermal and Adiabatic methods in one system. We call this new method Isobatic.

The CAL2K calorimeters are easy to set up, with easy to remove connections, making the systems compact, lightweight and easy to move.

The calorific value of any solid or liquid material that can be burned safely in an oxygen bomb calorimeter can be determined using a CAL2K or CAL3K system.

The CAL2K can be applied in the coal, petrochemical, medical research, cement, power generation and animal feed research industries. Other applications include : oil, coke, coal, foodstuff and biomass products applied in power plants, coal mines, metallurgy, chemical industry, commercial inspection, scientific research, etc.

When a determination/sample analysis is started the calorimeter will automatically run through the initial, firing and final stages without any operator action required, and can record and save the test data automatically to the calorimeter/vessel.

All our bomb calorimeter are supplied with one or more CAL2K-4 bomb vessels and the required installation kits (includes firing cotton, firing wire, benzoic acid tablets, consumables, etc.). The complete system also includes a filling station which is used to fill the vessel with oxygen and/or a water cooler to cool the vessel after a determination.

The use of multiple bomb vessels minimizes the down-time by preparing the second bomb and sample while the current sample is being analyzed.

The CAL2K range of oxygen bomb calorimeters comprises of : a manual filling station, a waterless system with external water cooler, Windows compatible software, printer connection, balance connection and LIMS support. DDS oxygen calorimeters offer high performance and low maintenance at a competitive price.

CAL2K CALORIMETER SYSTEM

The CAL2K system is the most advanced, fully automatic calorimeter system available today. the result of years of research with dedicated engineers employing the latest state-of-the-art technology and the highest quality materials. The CAL2K is easy to use and has special features, which places it in a league of its own.

E2K CALORIMETER SYSTEM

DDS has upgraded the E2K Bomb Calorimeter System. The system now has full menu control. The system can operate fully without a PC and results can be printed directly to a RS232 printer. PC and software is optional, however, the system is now fully operational without software. All menu functions can be done via the calorimeter.

ECO CALORIMETER SYSTEM

The ECO Oxygen Bomb Calorimeter is to operate together with the existing CAL2K and form part of the CAL2K range. It is aimed at a different type of market and will not be in direct competition to the CAL2K. The ECO is an inexpensive calorimeter aimed at a lower volume market, which requires fewer quantities of CV samples per day.

The CAL2K range makes it possible to achieve a 2-5 minute operator time per test without compromising its accuracy or precision.

External Cooling System - (CAL2K water cooler, only used with CAL2K & E2K oxygen bomb calorimeters) After numerous determinations/sample analysis the vessel temperature rises and needs to be cooled for the next sample analysis. The external water cooler ensures that the vessel temperature is lowered or cooled to ambient temperature to minimize the influence.

Convenient Waterless System - The oxygen calorimeter is operated without water. No measuring, spilling or leaking. The calorimeter is ready to use without needing to fill it with water, reducing sample preparation time.

Bomb calorimeters are designed and manufactured to endure and sustain large pressure inside the calorimeter chamber as the reaction has to be measured simultaneously. The sample is ignited with electrical energy during the firing process. During this process the vessel is heated from the combustion process.

A bomb calorimeter basically consists of a cup (crucible) to hold the sample, oxygen, a stainless steel bomb vessel, the insulating container (to prevent heat flow from the calorimeter to the surroundings; the polystyrene acts as the insulating container in the CAL2K), water (the CAL2K range is waterless), and an ignition system connected to the bomb for igniting the sample.

CAL2K Calorimetry Methods

The CAL2K Bomb Calorimeter Systems are the most advanced fully automatic "dry" static jacket isothermal oxygen bomb calorimeter systems available today. A quality product which produces accurate results. The calorimeters operate as either a stand alone unit or via a desktop computer. The cooler reduces the temperature of a fired vessel by having its hot junction of the peltier elements cooled down by a continuous trickle of mains water supply. The filling station fills the vessel with oxygen to 3000Kpa (3Mpa) at a controlled pace, so as not to disturb the sample inside the crucible.

The CAL2K range features a micro-processor based bomb vessel with automatic measurements of the calorific value of the sample, a clear LCD display, printer connection, connection to a standard keyboard, user interaction prompts on screen, memory storage for data, real time clock, PC software for recording data, and full LIMS integration.

The working methods used in DDS Calorimeters is: Isothermal (CAL2K, ECO, E2K), Adiabatic, Isothermal & Dynamic (CAL3K).

CAL2K BOMB VESSEL

The oxygen bomb vessel is smaller than the conventional vessels, which results in a smaller heat capacity. Special attention has been given to a thermally balanced vessel design which has been achieved using computer aided design (CAD) and computer simulation of heat transfer characteristics.
